As our reading through Ecclesiastes continues, we come across some verses that might seem odd. 7:1 starts out, “A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth.” We’ll unpack “the day of death” line on Sunday, but Solomon wants us to know there is a difference between character and reputation. It reminds me of another old proverb: “A good name is better than a good face, ” or when Jeremiah 23 asks, “Can a leopard change its spots?”

Solomon will have some other zingers we’ll unravel this Sunday. But one of the topics he’ll address is integrity, that high standard of living based on a personal code that doesn’t succumb to the whim of the moment or the dictates of the majority. People of integrity are whole; they don’t easily bend, and they have nothing to hide or fear.
