This week’s reading from Ecclesiastes reminded me of Rod Stewart’s song “Forever Young”. It’s a heartwarming song that wishes for sunshine, the presence of the Good Lord and all things good. It also yearns to be “Forever Young.”
Centuries ago Ponce de Leon begged and persuaded the king of Spain to grant him enough men and ships to search for the infamous “fountain of youth”. According to the myth, whoever drank from the famous spring, would be forever young.
Wouldn’t most of us like to be forever young? That will be the question we wrestle with this Sunday as we hear the famous closing words from Ecclesiastes 12: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them.”
