Do you have a favorite Olympic sport? One of mine is swimming. Katie Ledecky is the new phenom in swimming with an astonishing 14 Olympic gold medals, including 9 gold. She is now the most decorated American woman in the history of the games.

Her feats remind me of watching the 2008 Olympics when Michael Phelps was the rising phenom. He ended his Olympic career becoming the most decorated Olympian ever with 28 medals, including 23 gold. In one event, the 100M Butterfly, he won gold by out-touching his opponent by a mere 1/100 of a second.

Shortly after the race, Facebook reported adding an estimated 5 million additional people to their ranks. They attributed the increase almost entirely to Phelps talking about being on Facebook and people wanting to admire him. Two incredible athletes who are fun to admire.

Jesus asks of us something altogether different. He asks us not to admire him, but to follow him. It’s a much taller order.

An admirer is impressed. A follower is devoted.
An admirer applauds. A follower surrenders.

An admirer obeys God when it’s convenient.
A follower obeys regardless of the outcome.

This week at our outdoor service, we’ll ask the question, “Are you following Jesus?” Worship will begin an hour later at 10:30 AM, with a tasty BBQ chicken dinner to follow. Live Streaming also available at 10:30 AM.

Invite a friend to be your guest and don’t forget your lawn chairs.

Because of Jesus,

Pastor Steve Trewartha
