Colonel George Washington Goethals was the man responsible for the completion of the Panama Canal. He encountered big problems with the climate and the geography of Central America – incessant rains, oppressive heat, and deadly disease. But his biggest challenge was the growing criticism back home from those who predicted he’d never finish the project. A colleague asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer these critics?” “In time,” answered Goethals. “When?” his partner asked. “When the canal is finished, was Goethal’s reply.
He refused to become distracted from the goal. Keeping Christ at the center and remaining focused on what it is he wants us to do is important for those who believe in Jesus. It is easy to become distracted from that goal. We can get pulled into negative thinking and dwell on fear as we consider all that is going on in the world today. Studying God’s Word, keeping strong in our faith in Jesus, and pointing people to Jesus helps us stay focused on God’s vision for us. Join us this Sunday as we discover in the scriptures how King David and John the Baptist stayed focused on their calling amid the challenges they faced and how they pointed others to God.
