As we come to the ending of the Gospel of Mark in chapter 16, most Bibles conclude with the account of the resurrection in Mark 16:1-8. Some Bibles, however, also include the extra verses of Mark 16:9-20 with a footnote, which will say something like, “The most reliable early manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not include Mark 16:9-20.” If you read verses 9-20, you might be able to guess why.
Verses 17-18 say, “And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name …they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all.” (NIV)
Some years ago, I had the opportunity to visit a snake handling church over an extended weekend that took these verses to heart. In fact, they actually made these signs a central part of their creed and regular practice in worship. This Sunday I’ll share video footage from my experience and talk about why creeds, early New Testament Greek manuscripts and careful study of the Bible is so important.
