Someone said to Helen Keller, “What a pity you have no sight!” to which she replied, “Yes, but what a pity so many have sight, but cannot see!” I find it amazing how many great artists and musicians … were either deaf or blind and yet excelled in their field. In addition to Helen Keller, think Beethoven or Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles.
This Sunday we read about a blind man named Bartimaeus. It’s rather telling that, even though he is blind and a beggar, Bartimaeus addresses Jesus as the “Son of David” which means he knew that Jesus was the Messiah. Apparently, a blind beggar saw who Jesus was more clearly than the large crowd of onlookers who condemned and ridiculed him for even bothering Jesus in the first place. Join us this Sunday as we look at what else we can learn from a man who was lacking one of his key senses, that of the gift of sight.
