This week in our reading from Mark 11, we have an interesting sequence of events that might seem uncharacteristic of Jesus. First, Jesus curses a fig tree such that it will never produce fruit again. Later, he goes on a rage in the temple against the money changers, those buying and selling in the temple. The next day, Peter notices that the fig tree Jesus cursed the day before, is now withered down to the roots.

A friend told me about a church he worked at where the leadership thought it would be a good idea to install a new ATM machine in the vestibule of the sanctuary in case people forgot to bring cash for the offering. After just one Sunday, the negative reaction was so loud, that the following Monday, the new literal money changer was immediately removed. The money changers that upset Jesus in the Temple 2000 years ago were not the same, but they are some similarities that we’ll talk about on Sunday. Join us for worship at 9:30am.
