For whatever reason, we tend to have an elevated view of the characters in the Bible, including Jesus’ 12 disciples. Maybe that’s because after the resurrection, many of the disciples did some extraordinary things. But prior to the crucifixion, they usually come across as slow learners and people who are mostly looking out for themselves.
This Sunday, we read about another one of the disciples’ pride-filled moments. The Bible says pride goes before the fall and ruins unity by trying to elevate one group at the expense of others. While we don’t know the details of the disciples’ exchange, we know their arrogance descended into a pecking order with James and John wanting to come out as the top dogs in the new emerging kingdom. Of course, Jesus will use the occasion as another teaching opportunity as we continue working our way through Mark’s Gospel. I hope you’ll join us.
