Researchers have found that babies pay attention when their mothers open their mouths even before the babies are born. In one study of women at 25 weeks gestation, the scientists noted that their babies opened their mouths more often when the mother sang a nursery rhyme than when she made other mouth noises, such as chewing and yawning. This is one of the first examples of the baby imitating the mother’s vocal behaviors, and surprisingly, this occurs without any visual information.

On this Mother’s Day, as we think about children imitating their moms, we will look to the Word of God and consider how we hear God’s voice and imitate Him. We will also consider how we help our children and those we mentor to recognize and discern God’s voice.
