As we continue this Sunday in the gospel of Mark, it’s back to reality. Jesus and his closest comrades have just come down off the mountain where Jesus was transfigured before them … and now it’s back to reality confronting real world problems, a boy possessed with an evil spirit. Jesus will eventually heal him, but not before he seemingly makes everybody wait with patience and explains why the disciples couldn’t heal the boy themselves.

I don’t know how it is for you, but for me, patience is one of those elusive virtues that God seemed to be in short supply on the day I was created. I have never been one to pray much for patience because it’s one of those virtues you have to wait for. Spring, which is on our doorstep, always reminds me of patience. If you’re going to have flowers that bloom, you can’t keep pulling up the flowers to see how the roots are doing. But Jesus will teach how patience, prayer and faith are all related.
