In his famous radio play, “The Fall of the City,” Archibald MacLeish tells the story of a city warned of an approaching conqueror. The messenger announces, “the city of masterless men will take a master.” The city is thrown into panic and turns from one
means to another for protection.
All of the sources in which they seek help—the power of words, weapons, pagan priests—fail to give them the motivation they need to resist. When the conqueror finally comes into the city, it is too late. The people have been stripped of all hope and have already fallen down to surrender. When the conqueror raises his visor, it is revealed that there is nothing inside. The conqueror is revealed to be nothing more than their own fear of life itself.
