Few things are harder in life, than to forgive when someone has deeply wronged us. But if we do not extend forgiveness to others as God freely extends to us, bitterness will take root and in time, poison our soul.
This Sunday, we’ll look at the story of Jonah, when God asks him to go to the Ninevites and preach for them to repent. Jonah refused because he was bitter against them. Bitterness has a tenacious way of taking root deep within the soul and resisting all efforts to weed it out. It’s like the Creeping Charlie, a weed whose deep rhizome roots not only go deep, but also spread sideways.
But God has not abandoned us to a life of bitterness. There is a way to get better.
