In 1858, the Illinois legislature used an obscure statute and managed to send Steven Douglas to the U.S. Senate … instead of Abraham Lincoln. This happened even though Lincoln had won the popular vote. When a sympathetic friend asked Lincoln how he felt, he said, “Like the boy in Kentucky who stubbed his toe: I am too big to cry and too badly hurt to laugh.”
No matter who we are, rejection hurts. The hurt is exacerbated when we are rejected by those who are closest to us. This Sunday we’ll hear about Jesus returning to his hometown and being rejected not only by the religious authorities, but also by his friends and immediate family. As much as rejection hurts, there is much to learn.
