I don’t remember what it was for or even when it was, but it was some years ago. Someone had done me a big favor. I recall it being a pretty big favor, but nothing too extraordinary.

Afterwards I was expressing my sincere thanks. He said “You’re welcome” and then he added, “You’d do the same for me, wouldn’t you?” At the time, I had not heard that phrase and was taken a little aback and said, “Why, yes, I sure would.”

But afterwards I thought more about those words, “You’d do the same for me, wouldn’t you?” I honestly could say that I would do the same for him as he did for me. But the phrase has stuck with me ever since, mostly because it made me think about what I would do for a good friend. I think of the phrase now and again both when I’m doing someone else a favor, or vice versa.

What lengths would you go to for a good friend? The Bible talks a lot about the benefits of community. This Sunday we’ll talk about an extraordinary example of doing a friend a gargantuan favor. They didn’t have to, but they did. And it made all the difference in the world.
