Comedian George Burns once said, “The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible.” I’m not sure there is much truth in that secret, but sometimes we can get caught up in how long or short a message is … and then miss what the message is.
In our reading from Mark this week, Jesus asks a man he heals from leprosy to not tell anyone and keep the matter a secret. The request seems highly unusual. After all, Jesus is usually all about, “Go and tell.” Jesus wants the man to keep the matter to himself at least initially, so that he can travel freely into the towns and villages with the good news of the gospel. As is often the case with us, the man does not obey, and Jesus’ ministry is impeded. Without knowing it, he was biting the hand that just healed him. How often do we do the same?
